Not all MacBook screen problems are the same, and knowing what you're dealing with can help you understand your repair options and costs. The two most common display issues we see at TECHWERX are physical screen damage (cracks) and pixel-level faults (dead or stuck pixels). Here's how to tell them apart — and what can be done about each.
Cracked or Physically Damaged Screens
Physical damage is usually obvious: you can see cracks, shattered glass, dark blotches spreading from an impact point, or areas where the display has gone completely black. This type of damage is caused by:
- Dropping the MacBook
- Closing the lid on an object (like a pen or cable)
- Pressure applied to the screen
- Impact during transport
Even if the crack seems minor, liquid crystal can leak from a damaged panel and spread over time, making the problem worse. A cracked screen won't heal itself — it needs to be replaced.
Dead Pixels vs. Stuck Pixels
Pixel faults are different from physical damage. They appear as tiny dots on the screen that display incorrectly:
- Dead pixels are permanently off — they appear as black dots regardless of what's on screen. They're caused by a manufacturing defect or physical damage to the panel at a microscopic level.
- Stuck pixels are permanently on — they appear as a bright red, green, blue, or white dot. They occur when a pixel gets "frozen" in one state.
A single dead or stuck pixel can be maddening, especially if it's in the centre of your screen. Multiple pixel faults, or clusters of them, indicate a failing display panel.
Can Dead Pixels Be Fixed?
Stuck pixels sometimes respond to software-based pixel-fixing tools that rapidly cycle colours to "unstick" them. Dead pixels, however, cannot be repaired — the only solution is a screen replacement.
Other Display Issues to Watch For
- Backlight bleeding: Uneven bright patches around the edges of the screen, most visible on dark backgrounds.
- Flickering or flashing: Often a GPU, cable, or display connector issue rather than the panel itself.
- Lines across the screen: Horizontal or vertical lines usually indicate a damaged display cable or failing panel.
- Colour distortion: Washed-out or incorrect colours can point to a GPU issue or failing display.
