Reset the SMC

The System Management Controller (SMC) handles power management on your MacBook. A corrupted SMC can cause all sorts of charging oddities. Resetting it is safe and often fixes the problem:

• MacBooks with Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3): Simply shut down, wait 30 seconds, and restart — the SMC resets automatically.
• Intel MacBooks with T2 chip: Shut down, then hold Control + Option + Shift (left side) + Power for 7 seconds, release, then press Power to start.
• Older Intel MacBooks: Shut down, hold Shift + Control + Option + Power for 10 seconds, release, then press Power.

Common Hardware Causes

If the basics don't help, the issue is likely hardware-related:

• Faulty MagSafe or USB-C charging port: Ports can wear out, get damaged, or accumulate corrosion — especially after liquid exposure.
• Dead or degraded battery: A battery that won't hold charge may show as "Not Charging" even when plugged in.

• Logic board issue: In rarer cases, the charging circuit on the logic board itself can fail, requiring component-level repair.

What the Charging Indicator Tells You

• "Not Charging" in the menu bar: Power is connected but the battery isn't accepting charge — often a battery or SMC issue.
• Charges very slowly: The charger may not be providing enough wattage, or there's a partial connection issue.
