MacBook Water Damage: What to Do in the First 24 Hours

Water damage is one of the most stressful things that can happen to a MacBook owner. Whether it's a knocked-over coffee, a splash from the sink, or a full drink spill, the next 24 hours are critical. The actions you take (and don't take) in the immediate aftermath can be the difference between a full recovery and a dead logic board.

Step 1: Power It Off Immediately

This is the most important step. If your MacBook is on, shut it down immediately — don't just close the lid. Hold the power button until it turns off. Electricity and water are a dangerous combination, and keeping power running through wet components dramatically increases the chance of permanent damage.

Step 2: Disconnect Everything

Unplug the charger, remove any USB devices, and disconnect any external accessories. Do not plug anything back in until the MacBook has been professionally assessed and cleared.

Step 3: Flip It Upside Down

Turn the MacBook upside down in an inverted V shape (like a tent) to allow liquid to drain away from the logic board and other sensitive components. Do this gently and immediately.

Step 4: Dry the Exterior

Use a dry, lint-free cloth to gently blot any visible liquid from the keyboard, ports, and chassis. Don't rub — blot. Avoid using paper towels as they can leave fibres behind.

What NOT to Do

• Don't use a hair dryer or heat gun — heat can warp components and drive moisture deeper into the board.
• Don't put it in rice — this is a myth. Rice doesn't absorb moisture effectively from electronics and wastes critical drying time.
• Don't turn it back on to "check if it still works" — this is how most water-damaged MacBooks get permanently destroyed.
• Don't wait — corrosion begins within hours of liquid exposure. The sooner a technician can clean the board, the better.

Step 5: Get It to a Technician ASAP

Even if your MacBook appears to be working after drying out, liquid damage is often invisible at first. Corrosion can develop over days or weeks, causing intermittent faults or sudden failure long after the initial incident.
