What Is Thermal Paste and Why Does It Matter?

Thermal paste (also called thermal compound) is a heat-conductive material applied between your MacBook's processor and its heat sink. It fills microscopic gaps in the metal surfaces to ensure maximum heat transfer. When it dries out or degrades, heat transfer becomes inefficient — and your MacBook runs hotter as a result.

Replacing thermal paste is a relatively straightforward repair for a trained technician, and it can dramatically reduce temperatures — often by 15–25°C on older MacBooks.
